The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali

Surrealist art, like this painting by Salvador Dali, tends to depict certain obsessions of the artist. In this case, it is melting images. the work makes good use of bright colors mixed with dark brown in the foreground. The work could be seen as conceptual. Persistent memory can destroy one's logical idea of time. Hence, the melting clocks.

  1. . In the image there are three melted and soft watches positioned with the face of the watch looking upwards laying within the landscape they all are a light blue with a outlining of gold or silver, which counteracts with the background as the colours are basically of the same shades of colour. There is a forth watch the bottom left hand corner of the image facing downwards which looks to be a dark warm bronze and decorated with some kind of small black bugs.. To the back right of image there looks to be a small series of mountains that are a light beige with shadows of white going in to what looks to be a rive or the sea, the water is a very sensitive and soft blue. The bottom right hard side is completely black but fades into the the light of the image as you move to the middle. To the top left hand side of the image there looks to be a dying tree with one branch coming off of it, with one of the watches hanging off of it, it looks as though like a piece of clothing hanging a coat rack. The tree, the watch facing downward and the one next to it are sitting on what seems to be a warm rich brown solid box, with shadows reflecting the opposite corner of the beige mountain. In the middle of the image lies the third of the face up watches. It is draped over what looks like a distorted profile of a face as therelike a closed eye with long thin eyelashes and a short uneven nose. the face is the focal point as it draws the viewers eyes to it when they first look at the image. The value of the image also brings the eye of the viewer towards the brightness of the sky and sea in the background and to the facedown watch in the foreground. The image looks to be done with paints.
